Jump Onboard with this ‘Zomedy’ Road Movie April 27, 2011

It’s extremely rare that a horror comedy comes along that can easily stand side-by-side with Evil Dead 2, Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. As a child of the 80s, I really appreciate the return to this style of genre filmmaking. 2009’s Drag Me To Hell was such a return and now I believe Deadheads will easily become the next cult classic in adventure horror comedies.

I first became aware of this project when I reunited with Natalie Victoria, a Net buddy I knew from the Myspace days. She’s a fellow actress from Chicago rising through the ranks in LA. After catching up, she told me about her role in Deadheads as the love interest. After watching the trailer, I knew I’d fall in love with this zombie road movie. I’m not alone, in fact, everyone from renowned critic, Harry Knowles to Bruce Campbell himself have gushed about the flick.

So, what is Deadheads about you ask? Well, the film follows two slacker pals, Mike and Brent, who find themselves turning into the walking dead as they embark on a roadtrip to find Mike’s long lost love. While hitchhiking cross-country, they are being chased down by a team of ruthless zombie bounty hunters. The horror comedy also has elements of adventure movies from my childhood like Goonies and Back to the Future.

If that’s not cool enough, I found out the filmmakers are from Detroit, so you know I have to support Midwesterners making a go of it here in LA! Turns out the writer/director brothers are not only making it, they’ve sold out their showing at the 2011 Newport Beach Film Festival this Friday (4/29/11). Way to go Brett and Drew Pierce!

Mike (Michael McKiddy) pays a visit to his lost love Ellie (Natalie Victoria).

But, don’t worry, there’s another screening on Tuesday, May 3 at 7:45 pm PST. So, don’t wait to the last minute as you might be left out. To get tickets visit the Newport Beach Film Festival site. I’ll be there for the Tuesday showing in support of independent horror comedy. Watch this space for updates and interviews with Natalie Victoria and the Pierce Brothers when Deadheads comes to DVD!
